GENTLE RESTORATIVE YOGA FOR ARTHRITIS

There is a lot of evidence that suggests that regular yoga practice will help reduce joint pain, improve flexibility and physical function, and lower stress and tension. Yoga may also help a person with arthritis build muscle strength and improve balance. In fact, yoga is proven to help people with arthritis improve many physical and psychological symptoms. Recent scientific studies of people with various types of arthritis show that regular yoga practice can help reduce joint pain, improve joint flexibility and function and lower stress and tension to promote better sleep. Yoga comes in many different forms, but generally involves positioning the body in various poses along with coordinated breathing and meditation exercises. 
Individuals with limited range of motion or poor flexibility, due to arthritis or otherwise, may benefit the most from yoga practice, as it can increase flexibility, strength, and balance. As with every new exercise program it is important to go over your plan with your doctor and start slowly. We have included an introductory Hatha Yoga for Arthritis for course below. (Hatha yoga is a generic term that refers to any type of yoga that teaches physical postures. Nearly every type of yoga class taught in the West is Hatha yoga.)
After getting the OK from your doctor to begin you can start with practicing a few of the individual poses and work your way up to the beginning routines, when you are comfortable with these you may move up to the moderate routines followed by practicing the complete 70 Pose form.

Short Warm-Up Introductory Routine

Following is a very brief Hatha Yoga routine consisting of the warm-up pattern and a relaxing pattern with Shavasana (the "corpse pose") and Namaste (giving thanks and acknowledgment of the soul). This video is only a little bit over six minutes and is a good starter to see what Hatha Yoga is like or to practice if you have extremely limited range of motion until you are able to move into the beginner's routines.
